Day 264: I Believe in Snuffleupagus

“I did not know that Snuffulupagus, whose name is actually spelled Snuffleupagus, has a first name too. I learned from Wikipedia that Snuffy’s full moniker is Aloysius Snuffleupagus. This earless, tuskless woolly mammoth was a favorite of mine for sure. In case you don’t recall, Big Bird was the only character on Sesame Street who saw Mr. Snuffleupagus, until he introduced this “imaginary friend” to the grownups in 1985, the show’s 17th season.”

Day 213: Incredibly Bizarre Vintage Halloween Costumes

“What is it about vintage costumes that makes them so much more bizarre — and so much scarier — than their modern equivalents? Were people really that much stranger back then, or do they only look absurd in hindsight? Fed up with the animal-ears-and-a-bra option that, no matter how many times everyone rolls their eyes over it, seems to be the prevailing trend year after year, we decided to look for a little inspiration in vintage photography. We scoured the web for the wildest, weirdest costumes of yesteryear, and came up with everything from toadstools to telephones — and one guy in “fancy dress as a side of bacon.” After the jump, get inspired — or totally freaked out — by our collection of creepy, funny, or just plain bizarre costumes worn by revelers in decades past. We hope you can sleep tonight.”

Day 211: Teen Gang in ’50s Brooklyn

“These boys look like trouble. You can tell by the way they grease back their hair, toke their smokes and snap their fingers… Legendary New York photographer Bruce Davidson documented a gang of “troubled teenagers coming of age” in 1959 Brooklyn, capturing the young almost-underbelly of a conservative, “innocent” society. They called themselves the Jokers. See them look tough, get tattoos, get into fights, dance to records, nuzzle with their gal pals and loiter cinematically. Spotted by the Retronaut, indulge yourself with this look back in time, with a tinge of glamorous masculinity and teenage angst.”
